My love for Organic Modernism furnishings runs deep. It is one of my top go to sources for furniture. I use at least one piece from OM in every project. Founded in Brooklyn in 2007 by Karazona and Veerle Cinar, the pair opened their first boutique in 2009 with a full line of mid-century modern inspired furniture. The collection is full of unique pieces, that are well made, extreme versatile and affordable so I was happy to discuss how I incorporate OM products into my designs. Tiles and Countertops
Because of the smooth and durable nature of terrazzo, it also makes a great option for tiles and countertops. With the rise of the terrazzo trend, designers are creating accent features by using terrazzo tiles for things like kitchen backsplashes and shower walls. Choosing a focal point for an accent wall featuring terrazzo tile is a great way to incorporate this trend without it becoming overwhelming. It’s also easy to update old tiles or countertops without having to renovate and overhaul a whole room.
If you like to change up your décor pretty regularly and want to experiment with terrazzo without making a huge commitment, terrazzo wallpaper is a great option. While terrazzo as a term has been traditionally associated with flooring, tiles, and countertops, designers have expanded the original meaning of the term. Instead of always referring to concrete or polymer-based materials with mosaic pieces, terrazzo now also denotes a specific kind of pattern.
Terrazzo wallpaper usually features a uniform color-field with irregular geometric shapes in a variety of colors which replicate the marble, stone, and glass chips of the original material. Terrazzo wallpaper is available in a wide variety of colors and styles so you can make a design statement that is as bold or as minimal as you would like. Because it is mosaic in nature, terrazzo patterns can be busier than others. For this reason, I recommend choosing a single accent wall for your terrazzo pattern. Because of the visual stimulation it creates, terrazzo wallpaper is a great option for entertaining spaces like the living room or dining room, as well as for creative spaces like the home office or studio.
Terrazzo patterns are also available on a wide variety of textiles, which are even simpler and cheaper to incorporate into your home décor and to change up whenever you like. While it’s easy to default to something like a terrazzo throw or accent pillows, try thinking outside the box. What about a terrazzo shower curtain or terrazzo napkins for your next dinner party? A terrazzo patterned carpet is also a great way to make an homage to the traditional terrazzo floor without having to invest time and money on a renovation. If you’re renting your home and can’t make big changes to things like paint color or curtains, a bold terrazzo print on your duvet cover can add a whole lot of unique personality to your space, and you don’t need landlord approval!
Terrazzo is a very bold statement pattern, so it’s possible that while you might be loving this trend, you may also feel a little intimidated by how to incorporate it into your home décor. Even things like carpets and duvet covers can be expensive investments if you’re not sure you’re going to totally love the final effect. Luckily, there are a lot of ways you can dip your toes into the terrazzo trend before making a larger commitment and bigger investment.
With terrazzo being so popular right now, there are tons of small and affordable accent pieces available that incorporate this trend. With a little online shopping, you can find all kinds of affordable home décor accent pieces in terrazzo. How about a terrazzo lampshade, mug, serving dish, or candle holder? Even a small end table with a terrazzo top can be budget-friendly and easy to re-sell if you don’t fall in love with it. Look for smaller pieces that can add visual interest and excitement to your home without making you feel overwhelmed by this new style trend.
Whether you’re ready to dive into a full-scale renovation or are simply looking to add some new accent pieces to your interiors, terrazzo is an exciting and on-trend way to shake things up and take your décor to the next level.
