Every spring for the past seven years I fly to Palm Springs and the drive to the edge of the desert down a long desolate road to a little sanctuary called We Care Spa. Truth be told I obsessed on this place for years but couldn’t convince anyone to go with me. I mean paying a significant amount of money for a week of not eating and not drinking, cocktails, that is, is kind of a hard sell. I finally mustered up the courage and booked a week-long stay by myself. I met one of my closest friends that week and have been back every year since. I always get asked the same two questions from friends and family when I tell them I am going again - why and how do you not eat for 8 days?
We Care Spa is not your average spa experience. In addition to rest and relaxation, you’ll also find a variety of holistic approaches to wellness that combine several different modalities and methods. The holistic wellness of We Care Spa focuses on fasting to detoxify, yoga, meditation, emotional healing, well-being, and spiritual connection. With this unique approach, eight days at We Care Spa is about so much more than simply getting a massage and going on your way.
We Care Spa is all about detoxing your body as well as rejuvenating your mind. To get the best results, they recommend you begin healing your body three to four days before your spa retreat. To really prepare in the days before, focus on eating fruits and vegetables and drink plenty of juices and herbal teas. Stay away from grains, meats, fish, dairy, processed foods, caffeine, and alcohol. They also recommend taking two tablespoons of olive oil at bedtime and drinking eight ounces of prune juice in the mornings while on this preparatory cleanse. This pre-fast and will kick-start your cleanse so your body can begin to release waste and toxins in preparation for your spa experience.
We Care Spa treatments are designed to assist with detoxifying and rejuvenating your body, mind, and spirit. While they offer the usual spa treatments like massages and facials, We Care Spa also features a variety of unique treatments to take your healing to the next level.
I always start the week with the We Care Body Scrub which prepares my skin for the detoxification process. A specialized digestive release massage will stimulate your colon and improve its functioning. To improve overall well-being, Cranial Sacral Myofascial Treatment uses light touch therapy to balance the central nervous system which can help with migraines, stress, and neck or back pain. I always make sure to fit in a Raindrop Therapy which is a meditative technique that uses essential oils applied to your spine and feet to boost your immune system while also improving your breathing.
Another unique treatment is the Magnesium Detox meant to calm your overactive nervous system by applying a magnesium paste to your body for trans-dermal absorption while you are covered in an infra-red sauna wrap. My favorite treatment is the System Recovery wrap where your body is dry brushed and then warm castor oil is applied over your entire body while you are on heated amethyst mat. Castor oil has endless benefits generally, but the focus here is to cleanse your liver, while providing the added advantage of super soft skin.

Spending eight days at We Care Spa is about more than simply taking a break and focusing on your wellness for that one week. By taking classes during your time there, you’ll develop the tools you need to foster long-term physical, emotional, and spiritual balance.
Master Classes are designed to provide you with the foundation to build a balanced lifestyle long-term. These classes focus on subjects like improving healthy digestion, making healthy choices, and shopping for healthy foods. Popular classes include a seminar on cooking healthy and easy to prepare foods using the Vitamix while also optimizing your kitchen organization. You’ll also want to make sure that you don’t miss the class on transitioning from the fasting lifestyle at the spa back into the everyday routine of life at home.
Movement Classes including yoga, Pilates, and breathwork, are designed to increase awareness, stimulate the lymphatic system, and increase the detox experience. Even if you’ve never done yoga before, you’ll soon embrace the gentle style of Hatha Yoga which is designed to connect the body and spirit with mindfulness.
Finally, Healer Classes will introduce you to a variety of alternative healing methods which you can then explore in a private booking focused on your individual needs. Examples of healing classes include Sound and Light Healing, Reiki, Hypnotherapy, Breathwork, and most recently Numerology. And while all the class are a truly beautiful experience, this year I was most intrigued by Numerology and even booked a private session with the healer. The healers aid in treating mental blocks which may be impeding the detoxification process to help you find balance and open the pathways to spiritual growth.
And if you want to just relax there are plenty of options for that too. Take a nap on one of the floating beds, walk the labyrinth, or the beautiful pathways through the garden, lie in the infrared sauna or in any of the cozy sitting areas throughout the property.
Every cleanse is different depending on a variety of different factors, but I always leave We Care with increased energy and awareness, clearer skin, brighter eyes, and five to seven pounds lighter. Since my stay a month ago, I have gotten back into my TM (Transcendental Meditation) practice and remained dairy, caffeine, sugar and gluten free. Each time I take away new information and new tools back to my regular life that I use to maintain that sense of well-being and balance. And while I am not preaching perfection (I am sure when I go to Italy this summer I will eat cheese and pasta) I have the knowledge to listen to my body and get back on track when I need to. They book up a year in advance, but often have cancellations so you may get lucky and snag a spot at this desert oasis sooner rather than later.
